Black blood splattered across my face, hot and reeking of foul metal. Callum was right beside me. His telescopic staff spun fast, holding off two creatures at once. He smashed the knee of one, struck the temple of another—but these monsters weren’t like any enemy we’d fought before. They didn’t groan, didn’t scream. Even when bones shattered, they just kept moving, as if pain had been erased from their system. “What the hell are these things, Kaelan?!” Callum growled between blows. “They’re not from our world!”

They think the creatures that entered our world back then formed the basis of the myths and legends that still fill humankind’s nightmares, which is why so many of the monsters that come through now are familiar to us. Tales of vampires, werewolves, dragons and trolls, to name just a few, may have been inspired by real-life creatures who came through one of those naturally occurring portals long ago.

Each step echoed off the cold, concrete walls, amplifying the silence and my excitement. I clutched my note book tighter, my fingers brushing against the cool metal of the rail.
