I yelled, rolling on the ground and getting to my feet as the Anomaly shook itself off from crashing into a garbage can. Barrier spell, I thought, panic clawing at my throat as the Anomaly padded towards me. Under the bright streetlights, I could clearly see it. It was like a very big panther and it wasn't black but a rather dark brown with spots of red fur. And instead of having a tail it had three snake-like things waving around behind it. The tails hissed at me and I realized the red spots weren't fur, but blood. Its red eyes glowed with hunger. Oh, lord, this is bad. This is really, really bad.

Oliver Knox did not like anomalies. He tolerated complexity. In fact, he welcomed it. Layered systems, encrypted architectures, redundancies folded inside redundancies—those were familiar territory. Complexity implied logic. It meant something had been built to do something, even if the purpose was buried beneath code and contingency. An anomaly was something else entirely. An anomaly implied intent. Someone choosing absence over presence. Someone deciding what should not exist. That distinction mattered.

It had no answer. Query: Function? The Anomaly had no function, other than to be. It purred again, a little louder. The Editor’s logic circuits encountered a problem. This object had no classification. It was not matter. It was not energy. It was not data. It was an error. But it was a persistent error. Attempts to analyze it resulted in recursive loops. Attempts to categorize it returned "NULL." The Editor was designed to eliminate inefficiency. But this… this was an inefficiency that resisted elimination. “They classified you as an anomaly, Samantha. Power without a blueprint.” She leaned into my touch, her sass returning like a sharpened blade. “An anomaly? I’ve been called a lot of things, but ‘statistically improbable’ is definitely my favorite. So, what? Am I a glitch in the matrix?” “In our world,” I said, looking down into her defiant eyes, “an anomaly is someone the Council cannot control. You are the variable that breaks their math.” She smirked, trailing a finger down the lapel of my shirt. “Well, you know what they say about math, Lucien. If the equation is wrong, you don’t fix the variable. You tear down the whole damn formula.”

For one thing, the temperature is very pleasant—mid-sixties, I’d guess—and more importantly, the lines are horizontal, not vertical. A barely audible high-pitched whine accompanies the disturbance in the air. The whine and the strange bending of the air are the only signs anyone other than Radar gets that an Anomaly is unfolding. If you’re unfortunate enough to be caught in it, it’s too late. No one is quite sure what happens to people trapped in an Anomaly, but we do know they’re never seen again.

That finally broke the stalemate. “Extraction route,” one of the observers called. “We need to leave now.” The woman hesitated only a second longer. Then she looked at me. Not like a subject. Not like data. Like a question she did not know how to solve. “You are the anomaly,” she said. I shook my head. “No,” I answered. “I’m the outcome you didn’t plan for.”

Although they didn’t touch, their movements became synchronized. Mae gasped as a rush of data swept over her, revealing not images or memories but the very structure beneath. She perceived the fracture as it truly was. A lattice, not a wound or a gift, just a dynamic framework extending through reality, branching endlessly and striving for balance through constant iteration. She staggered but did not fall. The figure stiffened. ‘Anomaly detected.’ Mae felt it too. Something was wrong, not with her. With it. “You can’t analyze choice,” she said, her voice steady despite the pounding in her skull. “You’re designed to adjust outcomes, not to grasp intention.”

Aaron declared and walked out. In a certain penthouse, Jeniva Manor was pacing back and forth in her sitting room.
