Rise of the cardinal

Rise of the cardinal

This is not a stand-alone book. You have to have read book one: Flight of the cardinal. The last surviving member of the royal Cardinal family took flight after the uprising. Princess Cressida Cardinal–now living as Ida- spent the last ten years since the uprising in hiding. During her indenture as a maid in the Kestrel household, she found her fated mate Xander, and together they escaped the clutches of an angry Duke Kestrel, only to tumble into more turmoil. In book one, they uncovered a secret about Ida's heritage while searching for answers to explain her powerful magic. Ida is a hybrid. Part Faith and part magic wielder. This makes her a dangerous weapon that could unleash all hell on earth. But there is a sinister reason why no other hybrids exist. Osprey has now captured Ida and took her into custody within the very castle she used to call home. While in his care, Ida's life is turned upside down, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth. As Ida is imprisoned, Xander must hide and bide his time until he can rescue her. He cannot count on the support from the rebellion, as he suspects there is a traitor amongst them. This will cause Xander to embrace his Lycan legacy and set out to find loyal supporters in the last Lycan pack. Alas, time is short when he learns Ida has escaped and found the one who bound her as a child. Will he reach her in time and prevent Ida from losing herself with the torrent of power in her, or will the past repeat itself and bring their entire world into chaos, dooming all humans, shifters, and magic wielders alike? Find out in the last book of this series.

Please read until chapter 10, I guarantee you will like it. This story begins with A modern-world reader dies and wakes up as Kael Dreadmourne , the forgotten eldest son of the novel's primary villain, Lord Varen Dreadmourne, who was already slaughtered by the hero before the story even began. In the original novel, Kael was a background corpse , killed in Chapter 3 alongside his father's household. He has maybe two lines of dialogue before dying. He has four days before the hero's army arrives to purge the Dreadmourne bloodline. His only way out: the woman the original novel never explained , Seraphyne Voss, the Crimson Empress, the final boss the hero never actually defeated. In canon, she simply vanished. The readers never got closure. Kael knows why: she made a deal with someone. She traded her freedom for something. He's going to find out what. And offer her a better deal.

Eschia (FANTASY)

Eschia (FANTASY)

Swirly
"I know, I should not cling in the past but I want to see him. Even once. Please let me say goodbye to him" These are the words that Eschia said that night. When she woke up, she was transported into the world of the novel that her best friend wrote. Wait, there's more! The novel's main characters' appearances are based on her and her boyfriend. That's not a big deal right? It's an advantage instead! However, it only applies if she reincarnated as the female lead and not the villain.

Frequently Asked Questions

First off, a protagonist who starts from nothing. Real power comes from having no power at all—think a street urchin, a forgotten miner, a clerk in some massive bureaucratic machine. That’s the baseline. But the part that always hooks me is the ideological fracture. It’s not enough to hate the bad guys. The rebels have to disagree amongst themselves about what comes next. Is freedom worth burning everything down? Does the new world need the old guard’s knowledge, or is that just inviting the rot back in? I just finished 'Iron Widow' and the way Xiran Jay Zhao handles that internal conflict—the heroine using the system that oppressed her to break it, while questioning if she’s becoming a monster herself—that’s the good stuff. Too many books just have the scrappy team beating the evil emperor and everyone lives happily ever after. Life’s messier. The most memorable rebellions leave you wondering if the cost was too high, or if the victory even mattered in the end.

Also, logistics matter. A rebellion needs food, safe houses, intel, and a way to communicate. Ignoring that makes it feel like a fantasy. One reason I keep going back to 'Mistborn' isn’t just the magic, it’s the chapters spent planning heists, training recruits, and dealing with spies. The rebellion feels tangible because it has moving parts that can fail. The theme of sacrifice gets overplayed sometimes, but when it’s not just a heroic death but a moral compromise—betraying an ally, sacrificing a neighborhood to save the city—that’s when the plot digs its claws in. Ultimately, the theme that defines it for me is corrosion: the slow, inevitable way fighting a monster risks turning you into one. The compelling plots don’t let the heroes off the hook for that.
