“We have to solve this,” I said, examining the glowing symbols. “If we make a mistake, it could trigger a trap.”
Nathanial nodded, and together we studied the pattern. It was a sequence of runes, each one representing an element. We had to arrange them in the correct order to deactivate the protective magic.
“Earth, water, fire, air,” Nathanial murmured, his brow furrowed in concentration. “That’s the natural order.”
I moved the symbols into place, my hands shaking with the pressure. As the last rune clicked into position, the protective shimmer around the box faded, and the air grew still.
