The rumor becomes real when the first soldier steps into the road outside, boots muddy, coat torn, looking half-starved and fully exhausted. Two more follow him. Then four. Then a small cluster of men who have the weary, tight-eyed look of people who have walked too long without knowing if they were walking toward safety or another fight.
The village’s normalcy shivers.
Thomas the soldier in me wakes up instantly, reflexes sharpening, attention widening. I stand and move toward the door automatically, body ready to assess threat, prepare defense, speak the language of rank and necessity.
