Today was Valentine's Day, and I wanted my husband to take a day off. "Stay home with me," I said. "Valentine's Day is the best time to make money," he replied, turning away. As he stepped out the door, he casually reminded me, "Call me if anything happens." I had planned to wait for him to come back, but at some point, I drifted off to sleep. When I woke, it wasn't to the sound of him returning—it was the pain that pulled me out of my daze. Cold sweat soaked my face as I gasped for air.

-Tyler I chuckled a little, figuring it was brotherly humor more than an actual malicious insult. "Sorry," Ryder apologized again as he came up behind me, reading the note over my shoulder. I handed it over to him, "He left a message for you too," I explained with a giggle. "I know, I saw it already," he complained with a groan. "You should probably call him... He's been waiting long enough." My fingers brushed over the delicate purple blooms. I'd received a rose or two for Valentine's Day in the past. Nothing major. Nothing breathtaking. Nothing like this. I buried my face into the blossoms, inhaling the floral scent and basking in it. It was incredible.

Quickly. It's my birthday soon, 10 hours to be exact. I'm still at school, second lunch ended a while a go. One hour to go, and then it's the end of another dreadful Thursday. We ended up at a quiet lounge instead, just to soak in the holiday atmosphere. The lounge was surprisingly crowded for Valentine's Day. The vibe was much better than a club—a guitarist played folk songs while soft lighting bathed the room. I ordered an orange soda and sat with Lillian in a booth, listening to the music. The lounge was running a Valentine's promotion: every half hour they randomly selected a man and woman to exchange contact information. If they agreed, their tab was covered. It wasn't mandatory, just a fun little game. Lillian's eyes lit up when she heard about it. "At least they're thinking about us single dogs."

She informed filling my glass with orange juice. “With Victor.” I scoffed hearing his name and she nodded with a questioning look. “Sometimes I feel like, this Victor is his first wife.” She laughed at my statement and Valerie sipped her coffee. “Victor is Valentine’s right hand. He never goes out without him. Don’t be jealous of that lad, I can tell you that Valentine is straight. He isn’t interested in guys like Harman.” Valerie assures me like it was some serious issue earning a slap on head from Lola. I spit the juice ruining my dress and laughed hard.

The lie would start falling apart. So I walked to the café three blocks from campus. It wasn’t a pack place, just a cozy little fusion café with warm lights, polished wooden tables, and the best hot chocolate I’d ever tasted. They served everyone there — shifters and vampires. I knew Valentine's day was a big deal especially among shifters, but I didn't expect this small non-pack café was packed too. Almost every table full — mostly shifter couples sharing plates, splitting desserts, laughing at each other's phones. Heart-shaped paper cutouts taped to the windows. A playlist of slow songs I didn't recognize playing through the ceiling speakers.
