Today was Valentine's Day, and I wanted my husband to take a day off. "Stay home with me," I said. "Valentine's Day is the best time to make money," he replied, turning away. As he stepped out the door, he casually reminded me, "Call me if anything happens." I had planned to wait for him to come back, but at some point, I drifted off to sleep. When I woke, it wasn't to the sound of him returning—it was the pain that pulled me out of my daze. Cold sweat soaked my face as I gasped for air.

The vibe was much better than a club—a guitarist played folk songs while soft lighting bathed the room. I ordered an orange soda and sat with Lillian in a booth, listening to the music. The lounge was running a Valentine's promotion: every half hour they randomly selected a man and woman to exchange contact information. If they agreed, their tab was covered. It wasn't mandatory, just a fun little game. Lillian's eyes lit up when she heard about it. "At least they're thinking about us single dogs."

He isn’t interested in guys like Harman.” Valerie assures me like it was some serious issue earning a slap on head from Lola. I spit the juice ruining my dress and laughed hard.

The lie would start falling apart. So I walked to the café three blocks from campus. I knew Valentine's day was a big deal especially among shifters, but I didn't expect this small non-pack café was packed too.
