Sam sprayed on some perfume and looked at herself in the mirror. She touched her dark blue robe that matched her light blue and pearl-toned wardrobe. She highlighted her hazel eyes with black eyeliner and white shadow. She had put on lipstick, even though no one was going to see her lips, but it was to keep them moisturized. Her hair looked beautiful and silky, although only part of it was showing because the veil covered most of her face including her hair. She had changed a lot since Arthur took her to the estate, she was no longer disheveled and her hair didn't look like a bird's nest.

Close enough to smell the faint scent of graphite, fabric, and jasmine clinging to her skin. She didn’t move away anymore when I got close. That realization did something unsettling to my chest. “What’s that one called?” I asked quietly, nodding toward the sketch. Elara tilted the page slightly toward me. A long black coat with sculpted shoulders and hidden inner layers designed to conceal small weapons. “Veil,” she said softly. “It’s supposed to look elegant until you notice how dangerous it actually is.” My eyes lifted slowly to hers. “That sounds familiar.” Her lips curved faintly despite herself.

The veil from the dreams, the veil the priestess had described, the veil that had been exactly right in every particular, and she had been wearing it because she was shopping for her wedding.

Even when he wasn’t near, the air felt arranged. By afternoon, I caught Violet standing outside the library, speaking to a maid in a low voice. The maid nodded too quickly. Violet’s gaze flicked up and landed on me instantly. as she’d known I’d come. That made my skin prickle. I walked toward her anyway. “What did you tell her?” I asked. Violet smiled. “Good afternoon, Hailey.” “I asked a question.” Her expression remained polite. “I reminded her of her duties.” I stepped closer. “And what are my duties? Breathing quietly? Staying pretty? Pretending I wasn’t dragged here?”

Because the veil had thinned. And it would not hold forever.
