Neris held her head high, but I could sense her anger simmering.
When we reached Veronica’s door, Neris muttered under her breath, “If she tries anything, I’ll throw her fruit tray in her face.”
Despite the tension, I almost laughed.
Before I could knock, however, the door opened from inside. Veronica stood there, looking fragile and sweet in a white gown, one hand on her belly as always.
“Oh, Elsa,” she said with false warmth. “I’m so glad you came. And… you brought a friend.”
Neris gave her a cold smile. “Don’t worry, I won’t stay long. Just making sure my friend doesn’t get accused of another crime she didn’t commit.”
