The tyrant was dead.
A silence fell over the clearing, heavy and final. Then, Victor threw his head back and howled—a sound of pure victory that echoed off the mountains. I joined him, and then the rest of the pack, until the night was filled with the song of Blackthorn.
We watched the compound burn until dawn.
Victor pulled me against his side, his arm wrapped tight around my waist, his nose buried in my hair. He smelled of blood and smoke and home.
"It's done," he murmured, his voice rough. He turned me to face him, his eyes searching mine. "We won."
