It was being dissected.
The elevator doors opened, and the scent of gunpowder and rain filled the air before she even turned. Jaxon stepped in, his coat streaked with ash, blood spattered down one sleeve. Viktor was a step behind him, grim and silent.
“Three of my men dead,” Jaxon said, voice like gravel. “Two more missing. Zane hit us from the water. He didn’t just want to hurt me, he wanted to send a message.”
Raven crossed the room, her hands reaching for him, but he sidestepped before she could touch him. His eyes were distant, colder than she’d seen in months. The war was in him again, the old, unstoppable thing he used to be before her.
