VIVIENNE pov I stared at the mirror like it owed me money. Naked. Full-frontal and no mercy. The black veins had retreated to thin, ugly spiderwebs under my skin, mostly arms, thighs, ribs, a nasty crown creeping up my throat like some gothic tattoo gone wrong.

Muzan half turned to me. I did as I was told. “I’ll be damned,” he swore again. “What is it?” I cried with impatience, my mind burning and racing with all the possibilities that could possibly emerge from all this. “Come close again…watch his neck,” Muzan commanded, and in doing so, I gasped at the discovery. Each time I came closer, the black veins in his neck spread further up his face. When I stopped, the spread stopped. When I got further away, it receded.

That final foot would never land. The hand gripping the sword began to shake. At first, just a faint tremor in the knuckles. Then his entire hand convulsed violently, like an old man too frail to hold a teacup steady. He stared down at his own hand, his pupils shrinking to needlepoints. Black veins erupted beneath his skin, starting from his fingertips. They didn't surface from the outside. They leaked upward from within his blood vessels, every dark line spreading along the pathways of his veins.

Elizabeth observed as the veins on the side of his neck popped when his jaw ticked, teeth obviously grinding behind his thin pale pink lips. His clenched jaw was squared, with a nice love line in the middle of his jaw. A cleft chin, something one did not see everyday. There was a very noticeable ink at the side of his face, a black drawing of two serpents fighting for dominance, identical to the necklace on his neck.

I noticed something by the side of his neck and I touched his chin but turned his head to the side, exposing his neck to me. "These are," I trailed off. There were red dots on his neck and they looked like bruises from a pinch but what got my attention more was that the veins that were visible had a strange colour. "What is he doing to you?" I whispered, feeling a twinge of guilt in my chest without realising it. I let go of him when I saw he was watching me closely. "Is this you being concerned or you being curious?" He wondered. Then it pulsed. Thin lines branching outward from a central point beneath her flesh. Veins of shadow spreads slowly, faintly glowing red beneath her skin. That had not been there before. I stepped closer. “What is that?” I demanded. The doctor barely glanced at it. “Subdermal hemorrhaging. Possibly a vascular reaction to trauma.” “It was not there,” I said sharply. He leaned closer this time, frowning. One of the nurses angled a brighter light toward her arm. The dark marking reacted, It shifted. Spreading slightly higher.

He would really like to snap her neck right now. His veins were dilating and bulging on the back of his hands, almost as though he was trying hard to suppress himself.

I stood in front of the floor-length mirror and gasped at my reflection. The burns and marks had nearly all faded. However, the entire left side of my body from the top of my thigh and up to my neck had blackened veins swirling around it. It was the same way the veins swirled from where the shadow punctured earlier. They descended from my neck to connect all the way to where Ezekiel and Heath had been injecting me. Oh, Goddess, no.
