We neared his location, about a mile out from the border, to find him lying lifeless on the ground, his skin clammy, with blood trickling out his mouth and nose. A fountain pen materialized in his hand. “My apologies, Metatron,” Beelzebub said, voice like clanging chains. He scribbled a note to himself, looking at Samael with furtive eyes. Samael flipped him the bird. Distracted, Raphael nailed him with a kick to the ribs. Samael howled, punching his jaw. The two rolled off behind a pillar, their bloodthirsty cries still audible: “I want my phoenix wings!” Beelzebub cleared his throat. “I didn't expect to be in the company of children. But of course, I should have assumed.”

Beelzebub’s children flew above them like a cloud of darkness and their combined buzzing made it feel like the sky was vibrating. Callie stopped as Beelzebub flew down and landed in front of her.
