Tang Li was stunned as she looked at the dessert plate before glancing at the dog who was not making any movement. Did it die? Still feel safe. But above? BOOM— The front door exploded inward, kicked off its hinges. Wood splinters flew into the stewpot. The first soldier who came in was broad-shouldered with eyes gleaming wickedly behind a scent-mask. The second had a leash in hand already.

Until Dawn made a sound across the chamber that wasn't crying or contentment but something she hadn't made before. Alert. Aria lifted her head. Dawn was awake. Eyes open. Not tracking. Not counting.
