Too quiet. The smell of coffee drifted through the air warm, rich, the kind that should’ve felt like comfort. But the sight that greeted me turned it sour. Rosemary . She was humming softly, sleeves rolled up, her hair tied back with a neat ribbon like she’d been living here her whole life. The counter gleamed. A plate of pancakes rested on the island Liam’s favorite kind. Her back was turned, but the moment she heard my footsteps, she whirled around with a smile too bright to be real.

I pull her into me, her body tense, breaths uneven. “We’re going to fix this,” I tell her quietly. “All of it.” We call Officer Raymond first thing that morning. The man sounds irritated on the phone, clearly annoyed at being dragged back into a case he’d already dropped months ago. But when I mention Vanessa Abrams… and when Celeste adds that we have evidence of a possible plant inside Rosemary… his tone changes completely. He meets us at the Atelier within thirty minutes. He always would have. Evening. The garden in its late light. Four plants now. Rosemary. Thyme. Sage.
