A sleek black cat perched on a nearby fence, its yellow eyes fixed on me.

The cat hissed, arching its back, tail puffing up like a bottlebrush. I didn’t have time for this. I lowered my body, trying to make myself smaller, less threatening, and prepared to move on, but the cat’s challenge had already been answered. Two more strays emerged from the shadows, their eyes glinting with the kind of territorial defiance only street cats could muster.
I let out a low growl, quiet but firm, hoping they’d back off. The black one stayed unflinching while one of the others—a scrappy gray tabby—hissed again and took a step forward.
