They stood back to back, waiting for an attack from the unknown darkness. "A dozen, from all sides," Alex whispered. From the shadows emerged glittering cat eyes from all around. The painted warriors came away from the shadows as one. They were human-like with large ears and sharp oval eyes. They stood barely chest-high and took stealthy steps forward with spears and bows at the ready. The firelight caught the zigzags of white paint from their bodies and light metal armor, making the creatures seem rather formidable.

"I’ve traveled the world. Been to weird, creepy places, but I always felt safe… And now you’re telling me there are werewolves all over the place?" She turned to face me again. "This is too much." Her voice cracked. "No, no, no…" She groaned and covered her face. "Now I don’t even wanna step outside my apartment!" Despite the chaos in my chest, I almost laughed. The wild cat flailed, its sharp teeth gnashing at his wrist, but he didn’t flinch. With a grunt, he swung the creature to the side with a force that sent it tumbling into the wet grass. The wild cat’s body flickered like a mirage for a moment, but it recovered quickly, spinning around and launching itself at the warrior once more, its body a blur of twisted motion.

I crumpled onto the leather couch and gave myself a moment to take in Talon’s imposing form. His arms and hands were covered with intricate tattoos, each one telling its own story. Another design snaked up the side of his neck. A dark gray V-neck shirt stretched taut across his broad shoulders. The Warriors patch on the back of his vest gleamed white in the dim lamplight.

He bundled up my three sleeping cats in one go and flung open the window, ready to toss them out. Quick as lightning, I stepped in front of him, blocking his move. "Dominic, what are you doing? I raised them!" He exploded on the spot. "Haven't you heard the notice? The apocalypse starts in twenty-four hours! You expect these blind, crippled cats to protect you?" I planted myself firmly in front of the window, refusing to budge. When brute force didn't work, he tried persuasion. "Scarlett, listen to me. Kill these useless cats, and we'd have six slots. Then we could raise more beasts. We'd be invincible."
