I like the way the noise fills the place, even for just a second, before the silence oozes back in. Harper drives us to Meadow Wood, which is a huge clothing store in Zidiah. We don’t have to worry too much about humans; we rarely see any in Zidiah. Those we do see are mated to shifters.

“How can you possibly find peace at a time like this?” Avery placed a hand on her belly. “What choice do I have? I must conserve my strength for the pup. I will stay as comfortable as I can until the hour of birth.” Sadie scoffed and returned to her seat. An hour later, the craft touched the ground. Avery scanned the horizon. A vast, scorched desert stretched out—the Red Wastes. Dilapidated stone huts dotted the sand, but there was no life. This was a cursed land. Avery had maintained her front, but fear began to seep in. She was far from the Silver Ridge, far from the moon’s protection.

He reached for his bag. “What do you mean?” Wade asked, looking at him. “My room is the one directly opposite this.” He chuckled to ease the tension. “I made a mistake.” “Oh,” Wade said, taking the cigarette from his lips for the first time in Harold's presence. “It was nice meeting you, though.
