Beasts of the Moon
I ask, trying to sound casual, eyes still on my belly.
“No certainty until the signs come. That mystery still humbles us all,” she answers gently.
I nod, wiping tears fast before she notices. My voice steels, trembling at the edges. “Primrose… if you found out something terrible about me, would you still be my friend?”
Her head jerks toward me, startled, then she laughs. “Of course. Friendship lasts forever, Iris. That’s why it’s friendship.” She hugs me, then pulls back with a grin. “You’re weird sometimes, you know that?” With that, she slips inside, leaving me alone with the rain.
