The flames roared, casting long, flickering shadows. He stopped. Turned to me. The heat painted our masks in shades of orange and gold. Slowly, deliberately, he reached up and untied the strings of my mask. When he pulled it away, the cool air kissed my skin, and I looked up into his eyes. He took off his own mask next. The silver glamour faded, revealing the deep, intense blue of his real eyes—rimmed with the fierce gold of his wolf. Strands of hair fell across his forehead, messy and perfect. He looked wild. Untamed. Beautiful.

The smooth black mask hides his face, but I feel his attention snap to me instantly. Protective. Possessive. Feral. The werewolf recoils, snarling, clearly sensing something has gone very wrong. The masked man doesn’t hesitate. He grabs the wolf’s arm as it slashes toward Ezra and twists—bone snapping cleanly with a sound like breaking wood. I wondered if they all had scars, which might give another explanation on why they were all masked up until this point. Which would be a mystery on its own, given that werewolves were supposed to heal quickly - rogue or not. It was one of the abilities I missed all the years I chugged down wolfsbane like my life depended on it. The sweet ability to heal myself within short time frames. An ability our rogue captain seemed to be lacking. "Nothing," the masked man responded after taking a proper look around. "They were speaking."

I would save that crown first. “Now, accept your identities,” Alpha Hugo ordered, gesturing toward the Academy wolves. Each wolf stepped forward and stopped before one of us. In perfect unison, they removed the velvet cloths revealing the identities that were actually a mask. Masks carved in the shapes of different animals. “Wow, I got a lion!” one Alpha exclaimed proudly. “I got an elephant!” another shouted. “I got a bear!” The hall filled with their voices, excitement, curiosity, tension, all merging together.

I muttered, reaching for another crystal. As I worked, I couldn’t help but imagine the finished product in my head. The mask would just cover the upper half of my face, but the crystals would catch the light in such a way that it would be difficult for anyone looking from afar to make out my identity. Perfect for a masquerade. Perfect to feel like someone else, just for a little while. Maybe I could even convince myself that I wasn’t Audrey the human, but rather a werewolf just like everyone else.

Claws extended, teeth bared, he fought with the strength and agility of a creature born of nightmares. My heart pounded in my chest as I matched his every move, the adrenaline coursing through my veins. With every strike, I could feel the raw power of the werewolf within me, urging me on. In the midst of our fierce battle, an opportunity presented itself. The masked man stumbled, and I seized the chance to gain an advantage. With a swift motion, I managed to break his mask, revealing the face hidden beneath. To my surprise, I found myself staring into the eyes of someone familiar.

The moment their boots hit the ground, figures slipped out of the shadows… fast, silent, masked. Tall wolves. Broad shoulders. Black masks covering their faces. I turned my eyes back to their original brown color. “Now are you willing to tell me what I want to know?” “While I and the others were in the woods, some strange man approached us. From the way he smelled, we could tell that he was a pack wolf. But then something was weird about him, and that was the fact that he was putting on a mask. He never let us see who he truly was and neither did we see his followers since they were all wearing the same mask.” My heart sank that instant. I searched his eyes, but

Mark frowned but didn’t say anything else. “Hold on,” I said, a few minutes later, as I put the finishing touches of a wolf mask of faux gray fur. “Elva, come over here.” She skipped over to me, and I placed it on her face. “Keep it right there a second,” I said. Diligently, she lifted her hand up and kept the mask in place. I tied the ribbons securely behind her head, keeping the mask in place. It was lightweight so the ribbon should be enough.
