I settle in, ready to immerse myself in the past. The chapter begins with a disclaimer that makes me lean in closer, my curiosity piqued: "The origins of werewolves remain shrouded in mystery, with no definitive records of our species' beginnings or the identity of the first werewolves. However, it is widely acknowledged that the oldest known pack is the Amadeus pack, a lineage of exceptional werewolves said to be blessed by the goddess herself." I feel a flutter of recognition at the name Amadeus, but I push it aside, too engrossed in the text to dwell on it.

Beasts roamed every corner of the continent, along with creatures so ancient their names had long been forgotten. I spent the most time reading an old tomb on the twelve original gods. There was a legend amongst wolves that Lunette, the moon goddess, and Solana, the sun goddess, had been the first to undergo the transformation. The text I cradled close to my chest confirmed the legend, but it said nothing about the process. Who or what had turned them into immortals?

The old wolves shifted where they stood. "That symbol," Theron said slowly, "belongs to an evolving hybrid." The words hit like ice water. "An evolving hybrid," he repeated.
