deeper. I leaned back in my chair, chewing on the end of my pen as I stared at the screen. The stories were all so different. Some said werewolves were cursed humans, others said they were born from wolves themselves. But one thing they all had in common? Power. A dangerous, seductive kind of power. The kind of power you couldn’t just walk away from.

I hesitated to tell her more, but it would be better if I got it all out. “Hope, there’s more,” I said. She immediately looked wary. “I know I said I was ready for your secrets, but I’m not sure I really am,” she confessed. “This one is a good one,” I said with a smile, praying that she would see it that way. She looked at me expectantly. “Werewolves get their wolf at eighteen. After that, their wolf is always looking for their mate. We mate with just one wolf, someone that the moon goddess picked for us. It’s called fated mates.”

Bushes, trees and plants surrounding them with an open path filled with dried leaves where Lyra and the chauffeur drove on. Unlike humans, werewolves loved to live in dense forests. After all, they were still part animals. As he drove, she noticed the scenery getting less dense. It was like they were getting to the city. She could see houses surrounded with minimal trees. Tarred roads. It seemed like she was entering the Crescent Pack, the one she had just left. “Woah...” she muttered breathlessly. The high buildings and modern life was a shock to her. She never thought her pack would ever get this civilized. Well, at least not in her time.

“Would I not?” Riley came over and placed a mug of coffee on the table. “It was pulled from schools because wolves didn’t want to believe in it.” “Why?” “A few reasons.” Riley curled up on the loveseat with a mug. “A lot of the stories are about the beginnings. What the first werewolves wanted as the foundation for their packs.” I flipped through some of the top pages of my work, half listening. “That’s bad?”

They are drawn to it even when their wolf has not awakened yet. I closed my laptop and leaned back in my chair then sighed. “All speculations. This might just be someone who was bored and had nothing better to do and decided they wanted to make up stories. Werewolves don’t exist they only exist in story books, fairy tales. Yeah. Fairy tales.”

“How many stories?” There was another pause. “Understood. Send me everything you have.” He ended the call and remained facing the window for a moment, his phone still in his hand. I waited, but when he didn't turn around, I finally spoke. “What happened?” He turned around slowly. “That was one of my journalist contacts.” “And?” “Someone is deliberately spreading stories among humans about violent werewolves.” My stomach tightened. “What? What kind of stories?” “Stories about attacks. Missing people. Werewolves supposedly hunting humans.” He shook his head. “Some of the details are real, but they're being twisted and connected to things that have nothing to do with each other.”

*makes sobbing noises* Thank you for your time and patience and for diving into the world of werewolf stories that I created, where sometimes it’s best to accept that not all love deserves a second chance (or a third).
