The girl was obsessed with reading. I checked the perimeter again and set the traps. Then closed my eyes and inhaled deeply, expanding my senses. I heard a bird cry and an animal, a rodent maybe, digging into the ground. The air smelled fresh. There was no decaying smell in the air or stench of decomposing bodies.

But the statement seemed to have given her just the strength she needed, as she rose from the bed, and headed for the bathroom. Thirty minutes later, Phoebe returned, looking so refreshed you'd hardly know she'd been in tears. She got dressed in a baggy polo and short pants. While she searched the room for a pin to adjust her shorts that was a little bigger than her at the waist, she caught sight of a novel, which made her lips curl up in a smile. The sun was out, and the weather was beautiful. A contrast to the storm brewing inside the house. I signed and leaned against Mum’s grave as I continued reading Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince since it had been one of her favourite books when she was alive.
