I said, still a bit startled, "but where did that come from?"
Adam gently rubbed his warm hands up and down my arms, a tender gesture that made the chill in the air fade slightly. "You were bitten," he replied, his voice low and soothing.
I pulled back suddenly, my real annoyance flaring. "What?"
"Let me finish," he said, taking a small step closer, his seriousness cutting through the tension. "The bite didn't break the skin... You got lucky." His gaze dropped, evading mine as if he were wrestling with the gravity of what he was saying.
