“But Emily… she was a terrible mother. She saved only her son and left her girls behind to burn in the fire .”
Rage cracks through my veins . “I did not leave them! The guards pushed me outside!” I shout, my voice breaking.
Her eyes widen. The glass in her hand trembles, water rippling at the brim. For a second, she does not breathe. Her lips part, then close again, as though the words she wants to form are too heavy for her tongue.
“You… you can’t be .” she stammers, clutching the glass tighter until her knuckles whiten. “Emily is possibly dead , no one has heard from her in years . Emily ….” She cuts herself off, shaking her head as if trying to erase what she is hearing.
