When I Sixty Four Novels & Stories

SIX YEARS LATER (Allison's POV) As I stepped out of the airport, a rush of memories flooded back, bringing with them everything I left behind in California six years ago. The sights, sounds, even the scent in the air—it all felt just like yesterday. Nothing had truly changed, yet everything had. California had been my home, a place of both pain and love, and while it was a difficult decision to leave, I knew it had been the right one. Moving away allowed me to heal, to shed old wounds, and to reinvent myself in a way I didn’t think was possible. Now, I was here again, but this time as a successful businesswoman who had risen from the ashes of her past.

I count my steps the whole way down. Not one hundred and twelve this time. I lose count somewhere around forty. I've never lost count before.

I hope I am wrong. I am turning sixty today. I look in the mirror and see an old woman. I should be happy with my life, but a part of me will never be complete without you by my side. I have accepted that I will likely never see you again in this lifetime, and that is okay. I have lived a good life. I only hope that you find some peace. I hope you find a small piece of happiness and love, just like I did.

I'd asked myself that question more times than I could count. "I think..." I searched for the right words. "...for a long time, I built my life around everyone else." Ryan stayed quiet. "I was there when Alicia needed someone." I smiled to myself. "She'd never admit it, but she was a complete disaster sometimes." Ryan laughed. "I can believe that." "I helped raise Aiden." Patel, I am not the person who sent you those roses and gifts. I am sorry for misleading you. I did it all because I wanted to impress a girl whom I liked. June said. I loved June and how she made everywhere funnier when she had had a sip of her daily dose of coffee. She was standing in between my mom and dad and smiling at them. I could tell Dad was uncomfortable but he deserved the little torture for everything he has done to Min and I. Min might have let it slide by inviting Dad to my birthday but I'll need more than him coming here for me to forgive everything he's done.

I asked, hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. "Yes, alive, and with three grown-up pups and many grandpups!" She sounded so happy, and I couldn’t help but feel hopeful as well. He lived long enough to see his grandpups. "How old is he?" I asked. "Sixty-five…" "Oh, Goddess!" I exclaimed before soft sobs escaped my throat as my body shook. There was hope. Sixty-five is a good number, and I would take it if that was the farthest Darvin could reach. I would take it wholeheartedly.

Turned it slowly. Sixty days. And I was already missing things that had not ended yet.

"So, make me a deal. When I look at, and feel, and caress, and kiss your body I will only see you at sixty and when you do anything with me you see the me that is here now; sixty years old too." "You're sixty?" "Yes. I turned sixty last November. The body may not look great but everything works OK. Now, can I finish getting us dry?" Colleen nodded. I dried her and then myself.
