The summer Adrian turned sixty-three was not the last good summer. He had decided that and said it at breakfast in June with the firmness of someone making a correction rather than a wish, and nobody disagreed because Adrian had always been right about the things that mattered and there was no reason to start doubting him now.

"That too." He chuckles. For a long moment, we simply sit together. Then he looks at me with gentle eyes. "So..." I already know what's coming. "So…?" "When exactly are you planning to stop making that poor girl wonder where she belongs?" I stare at him. He smiles knowingly. "I've watched her all evening." "She's terrified." My chest tightens. "Terrified of what?" "That Day Sixty will come..." He pauses. "...and you'll let her walk away."

Way back. I met June in late 2004, right after the economy tanked and I’d just lost my first real job out of college. I was twenty-four, broke, and spending too many nights at this dive called Rusty’s on the edge of town. Cheap beer, sticky floors, neon signs buzzing like they were half-dead.

Forty?” The smirk on his face disappears, and she smirks at his displeasure. “I’m thirty-six, not forty.” She shrugs, “Still close.” and gets down from her stool and walks to the door. “You should change and get going. Do you need a walking stick?”

I whisper and carry her up, face the audience and smile, proudly carrying the greatest trophy I have. Tasha, who was about my age and lived next door, threw her door open and bellowed. “Go to hell! Do you think being sixty years old means you’re one foot in the grave already? We can easily live another twenty years, but not with someone like you though! Living just a year with you is hell! “Quit whining and scram! I’m done listening to you complaining!” My son was no match for Tasha. His objections were caught in his throat and he ended up having to scurry away with his head hung low.

"So here's how this is going to work. You have sixty days. Sixty days to fall in love with me, to accept your role as my wife, and to give me an heir." I opened my mouth, but he continued before I could form words. "Or I take what I want anyway. Your choice." Then he was gone, the door closing behind him with a soft click that somehow sounded louder than if he'd slammed it. I sank down onto the floor among the scattered cosmetics and broken glass, my white dress pooling around me, and for the first time since my parents died, I let myself cry. Not the quiet tears I'd shed at their funeral while cameras flashed. These were ugly, desperate sobs that shook my entire body.

“I need to run something by you. Can we push back the wedding by two years? “Gianna fell in love with this penthouse in Tribeca. We don’t get it now, it will be taken off the market next week.
