No man will ever be allowed to devastate me in any way again, I swore that to myself at fourteen. Struggling to stay in control and completely broken by this heart-wrenching turnaround, I tug myself away from him harshly, yanking my wrist free to rid myself from his infernal touch on my skin. I’ve no words for him and walk off fast, knowing he can’t follow me while she’s waiting, and taking the chance to slide into the stairwell, back down to the pumping crowd before I literally fall to pieces.

I threw the glass and walked out of the office, little did I know that the injury I had inflicted on myself left blood dripping and trailing as I walked on. My mind kept on going ragged as hell…

Then she turned and walked away, her steps slow and deliberate. I watched her go, the weight of what I’d done settling over me like a black cloud; I had hurt the woman that I love the most. As soon as she was out of sight, I sank to the ground, my hands trembling. I had pushed her away, hurt her in ways I didn’t know if I could ever fix. But it was the only way to keep her safe. At least, that’s what I told myself.

“And I’ll always care about you. But this... us... it can’t happen.” With that, I turn and walk away, each step feeling like a mile. I don’t look back, because if I do, I won’t be able to leave.

Almost hurt. "Stay away from me." I finish. And with that, I turn on my heel and storm out, the heat of my own fury trailing after me like wildfire.

"I'll fight you for ruining my child's future!" All I could do was yell hysterically as I was pushed to the ground, my head banging hard against the wall. "I didn't do any of it! Check our group chat! I never tried to encourage them to apply to community college. I didn't hire anyone to kidnap them and bring them to the train station, nor did I hire any keyboard warriors to slander anyone!"

I said. “Your choice.” He replied simply, like that was it and then started to walk away. And before he disappeared from view he added, “Try to remove that or touch yourself to relieve the ache and then see what happens. I know what you value, the people I had promised to protect on your behalf could easily come to harm any minute if I wish to.”

He’s the one who walked away. His chest expands with a deep inhale, his eyes still fixated on my own. “I didn’t want to hurt you,” he rasps, scrubbing a hand over his face. “That’s why I left. I figured that with me gone, you could move on from whatever damage I’d already inflicted.” He gestures toward the building. “And it looks like you’re doing that, so…”

Standing up, I left my feelings behind. "I want Sierra dead," I ordered, "whatever it takes."

To walk away. Why did it have to hurt so much?
