Really, really hurt me. So I turned on my heels and walked out.

“Whatever’s going on—” “I said I’m fine,” I snap, sharper than I mean to. The words hang between us, brittle and thin, and for a moment, I think he might argue but instead, he exhales slowly. “All right,” he says. Footsteps retreat and something inside me sinks. I slide down the wall until I’m sitting on the floor, back against the bed, staring at nothing. Why does it hurt when he walks away? That question terrifies me more than anything else today. Because it means this isn’t just gratitude.

“You’re embarrassing yourself, Indie. Wipe those tears and get yourself together. Try not to ruin my happiness while at it.” With those words, he walks away, leaving the iciness of his hateful glare in his wake.

“What happened between us… it hurt, yes. But it’s not something that can erase everything we’ve been through. It’s not enough to make me give up on us.” My voice softened. “If I walked away over something like this… I know I’d regret it for the rest of my life. And I don’t want to become someone who runs the moment things get difficult. Not with you.”

His apathy just enraged me more. A sob tore from my chest. “I can’t do anything…I can barely walk. I can't keep a job, I can't go out to have fun like a normal person... I don't get any enjoyment from life, because it never ever stops hurting. I can’t even sleep, because the pain wakes me at night. “I swear I’m this close-” I held my thumb and forefinger a centimetre apart -“from chopping off my own fucking foot. Having no foot at all has to hurt less than this.”

I will find my own way, forge my own destiny, and prove to myself and the world that I am more than just a broken heart. As I continue to walk through the forest, the adrenaline that had been fueling me begins to wane, and the true toll of severing the bond makes itself known. My entire body feels like a wreck, pain radiating through every nerve and fiber. My legs tremble beneath me, and I can barely put one foot in front of the other.

I regretted saying that immediately it left my mouth. "Yeah, you're right. I just keep forgetting. Why don't I go check up on my actual friend?" he said, walking away too.
