I asked how much in broken Italian, and he just grinned and handed me one. I pulled Marco over, paid, and bit into the lemon like it was an apple. He stared at me. “You’re insane.” “It’s fresh. Taste.” He took a bite, winced. “Jesus. That’s pure acid.” I laughed, wiped juice off my lip, and kissed his cheek. “Wimp.”

Anything for a laugh – honestly, it’s like currency in our little group. “I don’t know...” Kate murmured, already retreating into that overly responsible corner of her brain. “Oh, come on. It’s not like you’re studying for an entry exam to Yale,” I said, letting a little irritation slip into my voice. She gave me a deadpan look. “You don’t know my life.” “Girl, your life is memes, sarcasm, and occasionally passing math.” “Fine,” she groaned, caving at last. “Good girl.” I winked like a smug aunt handing out wine at a family dinner.

“You and me both.” He cracked a faint grin. “Guess we make a good team. Just not the kind the school board wants.” That got a laugh out of both of us. The first real one since everything went to hell. We played another few rounds — air hockey, some racing games, even a zombie shooter. For a while, it was easy to forget that outside these neon lights, the world was picking us apart one post at a time. At one point, Jackson checked his phone again, groaning. “Dude. Someone made a meme out of Daniel getting hit.”

Lena said with a grin. “And did,” I quoted, using the viral pop artist meme. The shock on my friends’ faces is so Priceless. Could sell it for millions. “Wait. You’re on TikTok?” Katie shrieked. “Can’t believe all it took was a dick to show you your true potential,” Lena added, ever sarcastic. “Who said it was only his dick?” I teased. Their gasps joined my collection of unforgettable memories. My friends have never been this caught off guard—and I love it.

Her tone of speech was so innocent that everyone who was 'Adults' got speechless. They continued to play and in between Nam Gil asked, "What is to be done if a lemon got injured?" everyone was confused and started thinking about it. Lan suggested, "Squeeze the juice out?" Zhen added, "Give a treat?" others could not think of anything. Suddenly Su Yeon started laughing at her own thought and said, "Lemon-aid!" Nam Gil gave a high five to Su Yeon and they both started laughing loudly. Lan got that joke and joined them in laughing. The rest of them started giving a dirty look.

I waited for the applaud to die down before I began speaking again. "I had never things easy for me when growing up. And I know it's not easy for you all out there too, struggling in the face of economic challenges, marital issues, personal challenges and the likes but I do not want you to ever give up. Yes this is for all of you..." the ovation swept the air once more but I still kept on speaking. "Don't ever give up. Because when life throws you lemons, you know what you do with it? You make fucking lemonade and drink to your fill!" I rounded up my speech to an audience of about a thousand men and women.

VERA’S POV I like these silly little games, it’s fascinating and fun! To think that Jackson actually wanted to play around and goof off with me today… What better way could there be to welcome December with a heart full of laughter and love? I peeled the lemons quickly, giggling to myself at the challenge he had proposed. Without hesitation, I handed him one of the wedges. “Ready?” I asked with a raised brow, already bracing for the sting. He gave me that mischievous grin. “Always.”

Now. I drop the phone. Slump back in the chair. The juice sits there, untouched. I stare at the blank koala on my screen and suddenly feel like crying. Too late. The leak’s been deleted. The emails scrubbed. But the world already saw. Screenshots exist. Memes are probably being made. Dorothy. Fuck. I whisper under my breath. “I’m so fucking sorry, Dorothy…”
