Cuando El Teléfono Suena Novels & Stories

I pull out my phone to check the time. It buzzes in my hand. A text message—from an unknown number. Who is this now? My jaw tightens as I open it.

As her mind swirled with thoughts, the sharp ring of a phone call suddenly pierced the air, breaking the suffocating silence. Her gaze instinctively fell on the phone screen. The familiar number made her pause. After a moment of hesitation, she took a deep breath, trying to calm herself and forced a smile onto her face. As soon as she answered, a soft, innocent voice came through the line, "Mommy!"

I have to deal with this everyday so I need to get used to this. The day went by smoothly and I may so, I haven’t done anything wrong yet so far. Right now, it’s already lunch break when my phone started ringing. I quickly grabbed to check who it is from above the table and stopped when I saw the name written on the caller. I squeezed my phone before sighing to myself. I slowly slid the answer button and held my phone up to my ear to listen. “Where are you?” he asked in hoarse voice. I bit my lower lip.

Susan didn't even think of that! “Ring, ring, ring!” Susan was jolted back to reality as her phone's ringtone blared, disrupting the silence in the room. "Hello, who is this?"

She grabs the phone from her aunt's hand, feeling a mix of fear and confusion. Hurrying out of the house, Rose clutches the phone tightly, her gaze fixated on it. Her heart pounds in her chest as the phone begins to ring persistently. Each ring sends a jolt of anticipation and anxiety through her. Finally, summoning her courage, she answers the call, her voice trembling, "Hello?"

I blew gently on the bowl of porridge in front of me, just warmed. For a moment, the rising mist blurred my vision. My eyes, dry and sore, began to sting faintly. Then the silence shattered—my phone, vibrating and screaming like it was possessed. I glanced down and saw a familiar name flashing insistently on the screen. Charles. Without thinking, I answered. Muscle memory. I even put it on speaker.

It was quite disappointing that my phone had not rung even once even though I had turned off its silent mode. When is Dina going to give me a call? I flopped myself down onto the bed before reaching out to grab the hair dryer. That was when my phone started ringing and vibrating on the same table right next to the hair dryer. My outstretched hand suddenly changed its destination as I hurriedly grabbed my phone. Just as I had anticipated, there was an unrecognized foreign number displayed on my phone screen. “Dina…” I said in a low voice as the line connected. “Well…someone surely sounds furious…” Dina’s sweet and familiar teasing voice replied through the phone before she let out a giggle.

The sound echoed through the empty clinic like a gunshot. I dove for my phone, calling her number. *The person you are trying to reach is no longer in service.* "No," I gasped, the blood draining from my face as I looked at the shattered glass at my feet. "No, no, no..."

I said. “Like what,” she said. “Like something is about to explode.” “Something is about to explode,” she said. I put my pen down. We waited. Nine o’clock came quietly. No fanfare. No dramatic moment. My phone just started vibrating on the desk. Once. Then again. Then it didn’t stop. Clara’s tablet lit up. Somewhere in the building I heard someone say something in a voice that was too loud for a normal conversation. That was it.

Suddenly, the call was hung up. Penny opened her mouth, wanting to say something else. However, she heard the beeping sound coming from the phone.
