Love Lies and Deceit
I had to keep her talking, to buy myself precious seconds.
"That's not true," I managed, my voice trembling. "Lance loves me, he chose me. He sees me for who I am, not what I come from."
She let out a harsh, bitter laugh, her shoulders shaking as if the absurdity of my words amused her.
"Love? You foolish, naive girl. Men like Lance don't love. They conquer, they possess, they claim. And I should have been the one to claim him, not you!"
She took a step closer, the blade in her hand reflecting shards of cold morning light, her breath coming in sharp, erratic gasps. I felt the edge of the glass door press harder into my back, the handles slipping under my sweaty palms.
