The silver whip dragged along the ground before it rose, whispering a promise I already understood too well.
The first strike came without warning.
Pain exploded across my back, white and blinding, ripping the breath straight out of my chest. My body jerked on instinct, muscles screaming, but the chains held. They always held. The silver burned deeper than any blade ever had, sinking past flesh and straight into my bones. I saw red in pain.
