This was the kind of promise that could ruin friendships, reputations, maybe even pack dynamics if it ever came out. I held my breath. Finally, she whispered, “I promise.” My shoulders sagged against the headboard in relief. “Thank you.”

It was beautiful, terrifying, and utterly alien. "The Whispering Gate," Misha breathed, her voice filled with awe and trepidation. She still held my hand, her grip now a little shaky. Her other hand rested protectively on her stomach. The air thrummed with a low, insidious murmur. A chorus of voices, barely audible, yet everywhere. Promises of forgotten power. Echoes of lost loved ones. Whispers of regrets, of roads not taken. It was a symphony of despair, intricately woven with tantalizing temptations.

Not a greeting. A promise.

Not a threat. Not a warning. A promise.

I turned aside and whispered the promise that was still in the air, my voice hardly more than a whisper. "Until you understand what it means to be mine, you will remain here." ---
