He’s going to strike. Run, run, run, run, run! I whirl on my heel, trip, and pitch forward, my kneecaps grinding as they hit the ground. Behind me, I hear a splash. I scrabble back to my feet and bolt for the woods, arms pumping, my skirt trapping my legs, hampering my stride. I hike it above my knees. Damn these boots. I curl my toes to keep from slip-sliding inside them. What was I thinking to wear these boots, this skirt?

I reached out and pulled the boots inside, closing the door behind me. The boots were made of thick leather, that was dark and smooth and lined with soft fur. This was the kind of boots that would keep my feet warm even in the deepest snow. They were new, or almost new, and they looked expensive, and they had been left there sometime in the night, by someone who had not wanted to be seen. There was no note, no message, and no sign of who had left them. But I knew.

I can tell as soon as my feet slide home that they fit perfectly. "They don't look any different than the military boots I gave you." "Sacrilege." I run my fingers over the leather. "These babies have PVC air-cushioned soles. They're indestructible." King whistles. "One emergency Shadow Warrior shift and you'll discover you shouldn't be too excited about footwear, and when that happens, no footwear is indestructible."

Meredith was wearing a navy fisherman’s sweater and a pair of white crocheted lace pants.The pants were fitted in the waist and flared out to a wider leg over a pair of Louboutin black quilted boots with a rounded rubber toe and heavy duty lug soles on a block heel. The leather footwear come nearly to my knee and you would think the tall black leather would be difficult to wear, but they're the opposite. These boots are the most comfortable shoes I own. I could walk all day in them. When you're a club promoter and work till three o'clock in the morning, comfort is an important feature.
