I looked out the shattered side window, the forest floor a dizzying tilt of brown and green. Then I heard the crunching sound of footsteps on dry grass. I froze, my heart leaping into my throat. They were here. Through the haze of smoke and dust, I saw them. Four men, moving with slow, predatory confidence toward the wreckage. Then, I saw the boots, they were heavy, steel-toed combat boots, the leather scarred and reinforced with strange, rusted metal plating around the ankles. There was a specific notch on the heel of the lead man’s boot, a detail that sent a jolt of paralyzing shock through my veins as I recognised it immediately.

Bree leaned back and listened to the crickets chirping, the leaves crunching under an animal’s foot, and another slurping the water from the lake’s edge. The sound that initially grated on her nerves made her feel so peaceful that it lulled her to sleep and she began to dream. Bree was looking down at her favorite shoes. She remembered getting them when she was ten. It was made of canvas, colored red all over, with a white check mark on the side. She loved that shoe, but the hike through the forest made it muddy, and she was trying to clean off the dirt when a wolf pup came and pulled at her pant leg.

The content of our bottle was quickly disappearing. “Your boots are beautiful,” Emily complimented. I was unconsciously rubbing my fingers above them again. They just felt so good to touch. “Thank you, it's a gift from Brian.” She reached over, grabbing my booted foot and stretching it out. I almost fell backward at the movement, but the human woman did not notice. She mulled over it. “Male elk, premium leather but so hard to hunt. I cracked open the windows just in case but closed the blinds tighter. I sighed, not at all how the night was supposed to go. I bent down and took off one of her shoes, then the other. I chuckled quietly. That was not what I would have expected.

"What do you mean? Why must it be white? I think you're making that up. Black or white, it's all the same. Get the black ones." I nearly choked on my frustration. The sales assistant quickly stepped in after sensing the tension. "These may be white, but they're pretty stain-resistant. If they get dirty, you can just wipe them with a wet cloth. It's very convenient." While speaking, she began demonstrating it for us. Mom looked at the shoes for several long seconds without speaking. I quietly backed away and found a discounted pair of white leather shoes in the clearance section. It only cost 30 bucks. I told her those would work too.

The top piece covers only my breasts. I can't wear it outside of this room. I stare at the boots-sturdy and made from the same material. I can't help myself and pull them on. Heaven.
