Mira clawed at her throat, her eyes wide, terrified, her fingers scraping at nothing as the invisible force tightened around her neck. Rowan lifted his other hand to finish it, and that’s when it happened. A flash of white. No, it wasn't white. It was blinding, holy even and almost impossible. Ghost was here. Esmerelda. Whisps of longing were wrapped around my name—a low whine released from my clenched teeth. The shadows moved, but no wolf or man appeared. My guards sat unaware of the men about to infiltrate this place. One man slumped over, blood pouring down from his neck. Then another. An unknown force visited each man- an apparition, a phantom, a Ghost. All eight men looked like they could be sleeping. Sleeping like the dead.

As usual, he said gently, "Don't go too fast, Rachel. I've got your favorite cake and a surprise in store." It sounded like any ordinary day between us. I smiled, warmed by it. "I know." I hung up and prepared to move when the light changed, but the sharp roar of an engine exploded from my right. I turned just in time to see a truck loaded with rebars barreling straight toward me. Before I knew it, my world went black, and all I could hear was the screech of something coming to a halt. A loud thud thundered. Pain tore through my body as if a brutal force was ripping me apart.

At midnight, I gave up. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up. The floor was cold under my bare feet. The moonlight came through the window, pale and silver, painting shapes on the walls. I opened my door and stepped into the hallway. The mansion was different at night. The shadows were deeper. The silence was heavier. The portraits on the walls seemed to watch me as I walked past them. Twelve women in white dresses. Twelve dead brides. Twelve pairs of eyes that followed me down the hall.

The sudden brightness of the light made me shut them back close. I tried opening them again, this time slowly, until the brightness of the light became bearable. My eyes were greeted by an overwhelming shade of light. White light. White walls. White curtains. Even the figures moving around were all dressed in white. Is this heaven? Am I dead? I tried to move my body, but I was completely paralyzed. Nothing moved. For a brief moment, I completely believed I had finally come to join my ancestors. But that thought vanished when my stare landed on the clock hanging on the wall.
