Why Does My Eye Feel Bruised When I Blink Novels & Stories

So, I stayed. Hour four was the hardest. The urge to blink became a form of torture. My eyes felt like they were filled with hot sand. I learned to "micro-blink"—closing one eye while keeping the other fixed on the glass, then switching. It was a rhythmic, exhausting dance. Every time I slipped, even for a second, I would see its fingers curl over the edge of the medicine cabinet, or see its torso lean out of the frame like a man stepping through a window.

I couldn’t see my whole body in the reflection because of its size, but it is enough for me to see some of the bruises on my face. I continued to squeeze. Its right eye – the one where an eye should be – ballooned outwards to almost twice the size of its counterpart. I could see the blood vessels engorging on the white of its eyeball, tiny splits appearing across the surface which began to seep blood, a violent burst of bloodied tears pouring down its face.

I’m not sure if it was because of the dark or because of my swollen eyes, but I tried to blink a few times and even though it hurt so badly I kept doing it. It took a few minutes to be able to see anything, but the moment I opened my eyes, the bright light made me close them again. I blinked through the tears and tried to find the source of the voice as my hand touched my face softly. Yes, my entire face was swollen and I could feel that I had a cut on my temple and blood was crusting there. The cold fingers touched me again, but this time it was my back and I flinched away, trying to stay away from them.

My eyes felt like someone had rubbed sand into the lids. “I need a break,” I whispered, though he wasn't really listening. I grabbed my bag and headed for the restroom down the hall. Inside, the harsh fluorescent lights made me wince. I leaned over the sink and pulled a small bottle of eye drops from my purse. I tilted my head back and let the cool liquid hit my stinging eyes. It helped the dryness, but it left my lashes wet and my eyes looking red and puffy. I looked like I had been sobbing for hours.

He didn’t take his eyes off the screen. "I brought an ice pack." He finally looked at me, arching his brows as if to ask why. "For your bruise." "Oh." He took off the glasses as I handed the small pack to him. "Thank you." "You're welcome." I hesitated before asking, "You wear glasses?" "Oh, it's just for the screen; there's nothing really wrong with my eyes." He smiled before lifting the shirt he was wearing and placing the ice pack by the bruised spot.

As she took the drink orders, she gave each of us a menu, repeated our drink orders to us for confirmation, then walked away. As soon as she was gone, I looked at Lori, “Did you notice something about her?” Lori nodded, “Sometimes, makeup can’t cover it no matter how much you use.” Lacey asked, “What are you talking about?” Lori answered, “When she comes back, take a closer look at her eyes and her left jaw. That is a lot of makeup covering it and you can still see it. The eye is swollen and you can faintly see bruises surrounding it.”

My cheek stings and tears fill my eyes. “DON’T TELL ME NO!” He screams. I can feel the heat of his breath on me and I drop my eyes to the floor. My tears betray me and fall with each blink of my eyes. My cheek throbs and I know it’s going to bruise. I force myself to disconnect and focus on the color of the flooring.
