The thing kept up until it was easy to tell that it was a person. Wings spread from its back stretching out wide. With one movement it used them to blow the flames towards the warriors that were standing too close. Flames engulfed them in minutes and then they were gone. With another great batting the wings stopped the flames altogether and the thing was all that remained. Elaina watched in horror as it began to move forward taking in the scene around it. A laugh rumbled from it making the hairs on the back of Elaina’s neck stand up.

Nyra’s POV Emberfall rose beneath us like a kingdom made from fire, stone, and stubborn life. For a few wild breaths, Seraphina refused to slow down. She cut through the sky with too much joy in her wings, gold scales flashing beneath the sun, the wind screaming around us in a way that felt less like danger and more like freedom. Spiro’s dragon flew ahead for half a second, then beside us, then behind us when Seraphina dipped suddenly, twisted through the open air, and shot forward like the whole sky had insulted her speed.

I feel my mother and Kaylani fly up beside me, replacing Amaya’s water and my fire when the last of my air leaves my lungs.

Before he can fall, I move under him, ready to catch him. “NO! I can fly,” he insists as he begins flapping his wings, I can see his struggle, the effort it is taking him to lift up into the air. I look down, searching for Ishir in the fire. “Ishir!” I call to him, before seeing a flash of orange, racing away from the flames that Ancalagon has started. I fly low, extending my wing to him. He leaps, quickly racing up my wing before shifting and settling on my back.

I had a moment of pure terror when I saw that fire about to engulf Merethyl. I scooped her up and raced outside, thankful that the blast hit me and not her. Even for me, that was painful. Some ran out of the pack house to escape while others ran into the building to try and help. My hand landed on a ghastly-looking girl trying to escape. “What’s going on?” I asked. “North wing. The North–the Alpha’s wing is on fire. Someone did that, it wasn’t a fucking accident. They set the Alpha’s quarters on fire!” She rambled on, fear evident in her eyes. What? “No, no, no! Fuck no! I have to get out of here.” For the first time in my life, I was truly terrified. Not because of the fire but because of how this seemed.
