He hated me deeply… Before I could snap out of those painfully deep memories, Serena had already ignored the flames and ran toward me. "Hang in there, Winifred!" The thick smoke left me coughing nonstop. My vision had also blurred, and I could only see Serena's small frame. "Have you freaking lost your mind? Get out of here!" Serena ignored my curses. She gritted her teeth, exerted tremendous force to lift the upper half of my body, and dragged me out of the laboratory step by step.

“Bag it. Mark the location. Get soil samples underneath too—I want everything from that spot.” A younger tech glanced over. “You think someone was on it when the fire started?” Reyes didn’t answer. His eyes stayed locked on the ground—burned wood, coils, mud. Not a grave. Not quite. But close enough. He turned away, rain misting his jacket. “Make sure the lab rushes this,” he muttered. “I need something to hold onto.” … That night. Reyes stepped into the club with damp shoulders and sharp eyes. He didn’t look around—he didn’t need to. He went straight to the far corner table. His usual now. Dark. Out of the spotlight. Half-shrouded by a broken overhead bulb no one ever fixed.

Rori looked on in terror as Mina’s eyes began to glow purple, but as she glanced at Kristi, her friend looked like she was in pain. “Leave them alone Mina!” Rori roared and almost as if her anger fueled the flits they appeared to grow in size and intensity. Murdok roared at the top of his lungs and let a large plume of fire escape his throat, attempting to lure the small fire creatures away from the suffering boy, but as the inferno burst free the flames seemed to move on their own and began to swirl around Rori’s body. The flits immediately dropped Mason and swarmed Rori, they buzzed and flew in blurred streaks around her, creating virtually a funnel cloud of flame and heat.

I can see the faint outline of what looks like wings spread behind her. Wings of fire that seem to take the shape of a heart… A piercing scream rips through the air as her power increases tenfold and surges into the sky, emanating in waves around her. I see the swirls of the flames behind her move before I see a tiny part of her left wing snap and shrivel into embers of ash. It’s too blinding to look at, and I’m forced to avert my gaze.

Give in. I closed my eyes and felt him deep inside me. I felt him clawing away in there, and I let go, dropping whatever barrier was holding him back. A ring of fire spread across my eyes. My entire body was a light yellow fire with bright orange and red tips. Wings erupted from my shoulder blades, spreading wide beside me. They were covered in orange and deep red flames. Every step I took turned the sand on the shore into glass.

They were also Raven Shifters, making them even more special in the Fafner Kingdom since 90% of our country's inhabitants hand four legs and no wings. I raised my hand and gathered a small amount of warmth around my palm and fingers, creating a thin glove of flames that I pressed against my brother. I splayed my fingers and wiggled them through his fur, adding a little pressure when I finally reached the roots and the heat of his skin. Staring at the dancing flames that harmlessly brushed by his dark brown pelt, I focused on my connection to my twin, envisioning a bridge in my mind that connected me to him.

They flare on either side of me and when I stand, the points arch to encompass a wide scope of the ground, causing the others to back away in shock. Because I have wings. Wings of fire.

My vision spins, but I push myself back up. I can’t stop now. The beast comes at me again. I close my eyes and dig deep. I feel the power inside me…the light, the fire, the part of me that’s growing stronger every day. I let it rise. My body lifts off the ground again, and this time, wings made of silver flames burst from my back. They shimmer like moonlight. I fly straight at the beast, dodging its claws and slamming a ball of fire into its head. It screams and stumbles, but still doesn’t fall.

Of course, she is a hybrid; she has the power of both her parents. We fly closer to the palace and hover with every powerful flap of our wings. More fire is directed at the palace. More pikes and large boulders are thrown at us. We fly higher out of range. We pick up speed and freefall backwards, our wings wrapped around us as we torpedo towards the palace. The wind and smoke twirling around us as we open our wings again, pushing more flames out as parts of the palace crumble and explode under the intensity of the heat.
