The Swan Alpha's Mate
"It happens every year. The swans fly south for the winter, and then back north for the spring. And every year, we lose some. To wild animals. To werewolves. To humans. Some don't find their way. They get lost, or they get killed, or they just... disappear."
"That's horrible," she breathes.
"It is," I agree. "That's the life of a swan, Aaronne. It's fragile. Precious. One wrong move, and it's over. That's why I can't just... let you in. Because if I let you in, and something happens to you, I don't know if I could bear it."
She steps closer. Her hand reaches out, touching my arm. The contact is warm, electric. I feel it all the way down to my bones.
