My breath fogged the passenger-side window as I stared out, each landmark unfamiliar, yet somehow ominously quiet.
Davis finally spoke. “We’re close. Just up this road.”
I looked at him. “Have you used this cabin before?”
“Once,” he said. “After things went south with the lab. It was a place to disappear, not heal. But it’ll do for us now.”
We turned onto a narrow gravel path that wound through the woods. Trees closed in around us, their bare branches clawing at the gray sky. When the cabin came into view, it looked like it had been dropped into the clearing by accident, old, worn, but solid.
