The engine was off. The lights were dark. He had arrived nearly twenty minutes ago. And since then, he hadn’t moved. The safehouse was smaller than he expected. A simple cabin hidden deep in the forest. Old. Carefully chosen. The kind of place someone would only know about if they had planned escape routes long before needing them. Victor’s gaze remained fixed on the faint glow of the cabin windows. “So this is where you ran,” he murmured quietly. One of his security men stood a few feet behind him.

"I'm just in my cabin, mom. Don't worry, I'll be back before seven pm. She winked at her mom before heading to the main door. Winter frowned when she saw a horse tied to a tree near her cabin. The door to the cabin was also left open. She hurriedly dismounted her horse, Sasha. It was impolite for someone to enter her property without permission. She had no idea who it could be because her family knew they needed to ask her permission before coming to her favorite place. But who was inside?

We’ve been here for two days. The cabin is gorgeous. When Gael first told us about it, I was expecting some rundown shack in the woods. Instead, we ended up in a massive three-story lodge surrounded by a lake on three sides. It looks like something out of Twilight—floor-to-ceiling windows on every level, tinted and double-paned with blackout shades that rise and lower by remote. And the view? Breathtaking.

I do not take it off. The new safe house is a cabin at the end of a logging road, surrounded by pines so thick the sky disappears. It is smaller than the last one, older, the wood grey and weathered. A wood stove sits in the corner. The windows are small, high up, too narrow for a person to squeeze through.

Transforming into a cardinal, I take to the sky and look around for where the witches are dwelling. A little to the south and slightly farther down the mountain, I spot the closest building. It is a huge log cabin that has to be big enough to house over 100 people in it! That has to be where the witches are staying. Flying in the direction of the log cabin, I make sure that there is nobody awake and expecting me. I make an entire loop around the cabin without spotting anybody else. There is a window on the second story that was left open. Peeking my small head in, I find that it is a bathroom. Perfect.

The group of homes we own, we rent out as vacation homes but they can be reserved for pack members that would like to use them for special occasions. Turning onto the long, graveled private drive, the cabin finally comes into view. Nothing like putting a bunch of people together in a cabin to create some chaos, she thought wryly.
