BOUNDED BY MOONLIGHT
Outside, the wind whistled low, curling through the cracks of the wood like a whisper.
Then came the sound.
A cry.
Not the sharp cry of an animal, but low, mournful, almost human. It rose and fell on the night air, so close it made Elora’s skin prickle.
Her head snapped toward the window. “Did you hear that?”
Joel was already on his feet, dagger in hand, his entire body taut as a bowstring. His eyes glowed brighter, his wolf rising just beneath the surface. “Yes.”
Another cry echoed—closer, hollow, heavy with despair. The air grew sharp and cold, misting their breaths in the faint light. The fire shrank as if choked by invisible hands.
