About my complete lack of any plan for the future beyond "survive high school." Some of it was practical—recipes for potions, instructions for spells. But some of it was personal—little comments in the margins, doodles, jokes she'd written to herself.

She pushed the thought away—she was getting way ahead of herself. As she slowly scanned down the pages, reading the words as easily as if they were written in English, she could feel her eyes widen in wonder and surprise. This selection was the longest and most complicated the book had yet shown her, almost five pages in all. Still, she was able to get the gist of it on her first read. Specks of blood fly towards me, straight into my mouth. I have no choice but to swallow but the moment I do, a strange sensation takes over me. My mouth burns and my whole body tingles.
