I tasted the silt on my tongue—bitter, dry, and metallic.
The roar of the impact went on for sixty seconds. It was the sound of metal shrieking, a high-pitched grinding of steel against stone. Glass shattered in a continuous, crystalline rain. The bedrock of the Wastes groaned, a deep subsonic vibration that made my stomach churn with nausea.
Then, slowly, the noise receded. The heaving earth settled into a trembling stillness. My vision was blurred, tunnel-like, as my brain rattled within my skull.
