A way to focus on something else, anything else, for a little while. He went on and on, describing each scene in detail. He was passionate about his work, that was for sure. He gave illustrations with his hands, his eyes were filled with excitement as he talked about bringing the story to life, and how I should make it more exciting and really mind-blowing. “So, for the second scene,” he continued, “it’s the confrontation with the villain. You’re strong here, Helen. Determined. You’re not going to let him get away with it.”

Blood splatters, painting the ground beneath them, and I can barely breathe, caught in the tension of the fight. The rogue, desperate and furious, manages to shake the wolf off, turning with a wild, crazed look in his eyes. He charges again, and I can see the madness burning within him. The wolf stands its ground, muscles tense, and then, in a breathtaking display of skill, it springs forward, meeting the rogue head-on.

I glanced at him, noticing his eyes were shut, and took advantage of his distraction. Slowly, I reached behind him and grasped the handle of the knife with one hand. I drew it out with a quick, deliberate motion and plunged it into his chest. Blood sprayed across my face, hot and sticky. He reacted swiftly, wrenching the knife from my grip with desperate effort, his breath coming in labored gasps. As he swung the knife back at me, his movements were fierce but unsteady, his strength faltering. I struggled to keep my balance, feeling my legs quiver under the strain.

he growled. I couldn’t care less about his outrage. My patience had worn thin long ago, and I wasn’t about to waste more breath on him. I bent my knees, sweeping low in one smooth motion, aiming for his balance. He was ready for me. Having watched my fighting scenes on set, he knew my moves well enough to dodge back just in time. His quick retreat left me free to turn my attention where it mattered most. Four more times. My hand snapped across Susan Wenger’s face again and again until her breath came in ragged gasps, her body sagging between the bodyguards like a limp rag doll. Blood speckled her lips, and her swollen cheeks glowed a deep, angry red.

Cara joins me, slicing through the air with her daggers, fierce and wild. Spells ignite from a distance—druids holding the line. Wolves howling mid-run. Growls and cries echo in every direction. Blood spatters across the trees. I throw punch after punch, kicking, clawing, tearing. Shadow howls inside me. Bodies slam into bodies. I feel every strike, every breath, every heartbeat. A soldier tries to tackle me—I flip him, land on top, and drive my fist into his chest. I spot Cara, holding her side, but still standing. “I’m fine!” she shouts. “Keep going!”

My world narrows to the immediate threat in front of me—dodge this claw, strike that weak point, protect this rogue. I move through the battlefield like a ghost, my body acting on pure instinct while my mind retreats to a place where the screaming can't reach me. Blood coats my hands, my clothes, my face. Some of it is mine, but most belongs to others—creatures, rogues, fellow warriors. Slowly, agonizingly, we begin to turn the tide. The creatures fall one by one, their unnatural bodies finally succumbing to our relentless assault. Each death is hard-won, paid for in blood and exhaustion.

“Of course. Go for the throat.” My legs shook. I pressed closer to the pillar, resisting the urge to squeeze my eyes shut. I’d seen fights before. Bar scuffles on the street below my apartment. Movie scenes. There's nothing like this. If this were one of my stories, there would be a pattern. A tell. A way to hurt the monster that wasn’t just “hit it until it stops moving.” Puffer Vest snapped, teeth inches from skin, and Corvin jerked his head back just enough to keep his jugular intact. The thing’s nails raked his shoulder and chest; his shirt tore, fabric, and blood both dark in the torchlight.

The healer stiffened, her lips parting as her body went rigid. Her eyes glowed white, the world around her fading into nothingness. She gasped as visions flooded her mind, overwhelming and consuming. The first scene struck her with a violent force. War. The land was a field of carnage. The air was thick with the metallic tang of blood and the screams of the dying. Wolves in their beastly forms tore through enemies, claws raking, fangs ripping flesh apart. Steel clashed, arrows rained, and the ground was so saturated with blood that it gleamed under the pale moonlight.

Writer's POV Derek beamed with smile as he unsheathed his sword, tossing the empty scabbard aside with a flourish. Rufus, or perhaps Alpha Nikias, mirrored his actions, struggling to maintain his composure. "May the best man win," Derek taunted, stepping back to create some distance. The crowd was captivated, their eyes filled with anticipation. Whispers and cheers rippled through the air... In an instant, Derek lunged at Rufus, but Rufus dodged just in time, gaining the upper hand and delivering a swift kick to Derek's ribs.

He staggered, and I drove my silver blade deep into his thigh, severing the muscle. He collapsed, wincing in agony. The battlefield was chaotic. It was filled with growls, screams and the sound of bodies hitting the ground. Boone fought like his life depended on it. His claws sliced through wolves as he disabled his opponents. Rod was all fangs and power. Cynthia’s strength was unmatched—she tore through their ranks, leaving behind a trail of injured warriors. Vivi’s whip was deadly, wrapping around weapons, limbs, throats—anything that left an opening for us to exploit.
