Elena's head snapped to the door as Xavier walked into their bedroom with a tired face. Ignoring her, he walked into the bathroom and she heard him turn on the shower. “Leave us.” She hesitated just a fraction. He didn’t look at her when he repeated it. “Now.” She bowed and exited swiftly. The door closed behind her with a final, echoing click. We were alone…again. My chest felt tight, compressed. Xander stepped closer until his shadow fell over me completely. He crouched slightly, bringing himself level with my seated height, the letter still in his hand. “I’m going to read this,” he said calmly. “But not yet.”
