“Then you try again. But Zara, you have to try. You have to take that first step.”
Phoenix looked up at me and smiled, showing his tiny teeth. “Mama.”
The word still melted my heart every time.
“For him,” I said. “I’ll do it for him.”
“Do it for both of you,” Green corrected. “You deserve to heal too. You deserve to live, not just survive.”
I nodded slowly, feeling something shift inside me. A decision crystallizing.
“Okay. I’ll start looking for apartments tomorrow. And I’ll find a therapist. I’ll actually try to move forward instead of just existing.”
