The old man's, and Light’s eyes glow brightly. Soon, the old man’s eyes became blank, and stared at the space in a daze. Light closed the old man’s eyes and then beamed.

I can't see anything. "Xarion?" My voice comes out before I can stop it, and it carries more of what I'm feeling than I'd like it to, all the fear and the drive over and the four unanswered callbacks sitting right there in his name. "Xarion, where are you? Can someone turn a light on? What is…" The lights come on. All of them, at the same time, flooding the room with warm golden light, and what it reveals makes my brain stop working for approximately two full seconds.

I said, and meant it. He shouldered his empty box and headed for the door. The last light fell across the console, and the small green blink in the corner was steady, patient, like a light waiting for someone to answer it. Surprised, I looked outside, but it was a moonless night and I couldn’t make out anything outside but I could see a dim light, maybe from his phone screen. I quickly type up a message. Me: Why are you out there? Lorenzo: I want to see you. Oh no! At this hour? Me: Go back to your tent. Someone might see you. Lorenzo: No one’s out here. But I will keep standing here until you let me in. Maybe then I might get caught by someone outside your tent. I could almost hear his voice through this text, teasing me. Me: It’s late and I want to sleep. Please go away.

The afternoon didn’t have anything terrible waiting in it. I called Max. He picked up on the third ring, which meant he’d stopped whatever he was doing. “T,” he said. “How are you?” “Good,” he answered. “Actually good. Not faking-it good. Real good.” A short pause. “The light did something new this morning.” “Tell me.” “I was at my desk, slogging through that border law essay I keep avoiding. Super boring, normal boring. Then my hands started glowing.” He laughed a little. “Not the panic flare or the warm contact thing. Something different. Like… light getting organized. Finding its own order.”

I take a minute to collect my thoughts. “I have a ring light.” Calum’s face says it all, that he has no idea what I’m talking about. I eye the space between us. The distance is keeping me sane but I need to show him what a ring light can do. Braving it, I pull out my phone and cross over to him. His lips twist in that cute pout and the only thing I can do not to kiss him is by tapping on my phone’s screen. I’m a mess. “I use it for my TicToc.”

The clock on my phone reads 12:23 AM, and I’m still wide awake, staring at the ceiling. The soft glow from my bedside lamp barely cuts through the darkness, but it feels too bright for how I’m feeling right now.
