Your Presence Is An Open Door Novels & Stories

She fell to her knees, blood pouring from her eyes, her mouth, and her hands. “No…” she whispered. “I… I was so close to it…” “You were never close,” I said, standing over her. “The Door doesn’t open for the strongest. It opens for the most trustworthy.” I turned. And placed my hand on the Door. Runes bloomed across its surface, blue, silver, crimson then dissolved into light. The Door swung open. Not with a roar. Like it had been waiting for me all along. Inside, there was no throne.

Period. He procured a fancy looking key from his pocket and opened the door, not bothering to knock. That simple action made me wonder how wonderful it must feel to have a home to come back to and find out that the door would always be open for you- no matter how long you’ve been away. I pasted a smile on my face to ward off that feeling of longing within me that was becoming more frequent lately just as Adrian stepped aside to let me enter first.

Presence I have never been offered before. "Then let this be the first time," Lumis said. "But it can't be one-sided. If you want genuine presence, you have to offer something back. Not crossing. **Not even gods. A thousand eyes blinked open. Something had come through. Not because it wanted to. Because **the door had been opened.**

I walked beside her in silence, each step carrying the weight of my doubts and insecurities. We arrived at Maya's room, and she gently pushed the door open, inviting me inside. As we crossed the threshold, Maya's deliberate movement caught my attention. With a graceful motion, she closed the door behind us, shutting out the outside world. The soft click of the door latching resonated in the room, creating a sense of privacy and security. It was a small yet significant gesture, an unspoken reassurance that I could trust her with my vulnerability.

But there was something else alongside it. The door. I had not fully articulated this to myself until I felt its absence. There had been a small thing inside me, through all of it, through the lipstick and the red light and the paternity test and the studio parking lot, a small thing that had been keeping a particular interior space open. Not hope in the simple sense. Not the expectation of a specific outcome. Just the possibility of one. Just the small door left open in the wall. Blocking his number felt like something sealing.

Doors were invitations to make assumptions about the nature of the relationship between the person or people outside and those inside. A closed door made you question things; an open door gave no reason to wonder. She entered the space.

Because inside means one thing. Too close. Ivan stepped forward. “That’s not possible.” But we all knew it was. Because possibility had already stopped following rules. I felt it then.
